Epigonus was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Epigoninae by Steurbaut (1979) and Schwarzhans (1980); to Serranidae by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Epigonidae by Steurbaut (1982), Steurbaut (1984), Schwarzhans (2013) and Schwarzhans (2019).
