Macruronus was named by Guenther (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Anacanthini by Frost (1934); to Merlucciinae by Schwarzhans (1980) and Schwarzhans (1985); to Gadiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macruronidae by Schwarzhans et al. (2017) and Schwarzhans (2019).
