Ostrea costei was named by Coquand (1869). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Fatina (Avia) costei by Bobkova (1961); it was recombined as Pycnodonte (Costeina) costei by Malchus (1990); it was recombined as Pycnodonte costei by Freneix and Viaud (1986) and El Qot (2006).
