Aethiocarenus was named by Poinar and Brown (2016). Its type is Aethiocarenus burmanicus. It is the type genus of Aethiocarenidae.
It was assigned to Aethiocarenidae by Poinar and Brown (2016); and to Alienopteridae by Vršanský et al. (2018), Luo et al. (2022).
