Taxonomy
Stethacanthus was named by Newberry (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 451,898]. It is not extant. Its type is Physonemus altonensis.
It was assigned to Ichthyodorulites by Hay (1902); to Cochliodontidae by Eastman (1903); to Janassidae by Jordan (1963); to Stethacanthidae by Zangerl (1981), Williams (1985), Lund (1985); to Symmoriida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Symmoriidae by Ginter et al. (2010), Ivanov and Lebedev (2014), Ginter (2018).
