Taxonomy
Mortoniceras bontanti was named by de Grossouvre (1894). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Carrières de la Ribochère, Couture (MNHN collection, zone B), which is in a Coniacian carbonate grainstone in the Craie de Villedieu Formation of France.

It was recombined as Protexanites (Protexanites) bontanti by Kennedy (1984), Kennedy (1995).
