Plataleidae was named by Bonaparte (1838). It is extant.

It was assigned to Plataleoidae by Hay (1930); to Charadriiformes by Carroll (1988); to Ciconiiformes by Olson and James (1982), Olson and James (1991), Emslie (1992), Guthrie (1992) and Olson and Rasmussen (2001); and to Threskiornithoidea by Livezey and Zusi (2007).
