Tapes squamosa was named by Carpenter (1857). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chione (Timoclea) squamosa by Keen (1971); it was recombined as Chione squamosa by Lindberg et al. (1980); it was recombined as Chioneryx squamosa by Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012); it was recombined as Chioneryx squamosa by Hendy (2021).
