Taxonomy
Scarabaeus brunnus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Serica.

It was recombined as Melolontha brunnea by Fabricius (1775); it was recombined as Serica brunna by Krell (1996); it was misspelled as Scarabaeus brunneus by Müller (1776), Goeze (1777); it was recombined as Serica brunnea by Green et al. (2006), Allsopp and Schoolmeesters (2024).
