Tohoraata waitakiensis

Taxonomy
Mauicetus waitakiensis was named by Marples (1956) [old holotype number UO G.47.2]. Its type specimen is OMC GL 402, a partial skull (incomplete occipital, left and right tympanic bullae, atlas, axis and three cervical vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Duntroon (Kokoamu Greensand), which is in a Duntroonian offshore shelf limestone in the Kokoamu Greensand Formation of New Zealand.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Mauicetus by Fordyce (1991); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eomysticetoidea by Steeman (2007); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eomysticetidae by Fordyce and Roberts (2009); it was recombined as Tohoraata waitakiensis by Boessenecker and Fordyce (2015), Boessenecker and Fordyce (2017), Tsai and Kohno (2017).

Fordyce 2015A small mysticete similar in size to but separated from T. raekohao in the following features: foramen magnum circular, tympanic bullae slightly ante- roposteriorly shorter and relatively wider with more strongly convex ventral surface, conical process of bulla dorsoventrally much thinner and plate-like. Tohoraata waitakiensis differs from all other mysticetes in possessing a flattened ventral margin of the atlas.
