Taxonomy
Melanothrips varicornis was named by Bagnall (1923). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic amber, Konigsberg collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in the Russian Federation.

It was recombined as Archankothrips variicornis by Bagnall (1926); it was recombined as Archankothrips varicornis by Mound (1968), Schliephake (2001), Ulitzka (2017).
