Palaeoempalia was named by Meunier (1897).

It was synonymized subjectively with Sciobia by Edwards (1940).

It was assigned to Sciophilinae by Meunier (1904), Johannsen (1909); to Mycetophilidae by Carpenter (1992), Evenhuis (1994); and to Gnoristinae by Blagoderov (2019), Oliveira and Amorim (2021).
