Hydrometra was named by Latreille (1796). It is extant. It is the type genus of Hydrometraedes, Hydrometrinae.

It was assigned to Hemiptera by Latreille (1796); to Cimicides by Latreille (1802); and to Hydrometrinae by Andersen (2003), Pêgas et al. (2017).
