Strophomena lachrymosa was named by Conrad (1842). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Productella lachrymosa by Hall (1867); it was recombined as Productus (Productella) lachrymosus by Walcott (1884); it was recombined as Whidbornella lachrymosa by Leighton (2000).
