Geophilidae was named by Leach (1815). It is extant. Its type is Geophilus.

It was assigned to Geophilida by Hoffman (1969); to Adesmata by Edgecombe and Giribet (2007); and to Geophilomorpha by Wesener and Moritz (2018), Riquelme and Hernández-Patricio (2018).
