Idiocerus was named by Lewis (1834). It is extant. It is the type genus of Idiocerinae, Idiocerini.

It was assigned to Bythoscopini by Statz (1950); and to Idiocerini by Dietrich and Thomas (2018), Dmitriev (2020), Borodin and Borodina (2021).
