Protomyia hypogaea was named by von Heyden and von Heyden (1865). Its type specimen is NMHUK In 58803, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (Krantz Bonn coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large shale in the Rott Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Plecia hypogaea by Statz (1943), Evenhuis (1994), Skartveit and Wedmann (2021).

Plecia pulchella was named by Meunier (1915). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (Bauckhorn coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large lignite in Germany.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plecia hypogaea by Skartveit and Wedmann (2021).
