Taxonomy
Apis vetustus was named by Engel (1998). Its type specimen is MCZ 7514, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (MCZ coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large lignite in the Rott Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Apis (Priorapis) vetusta by Engel (1999); it was corrected as Apis vetusta by Engel et al. (2009).
