Leptestiina was named by Opik (1933). Its type is Leptestiina prantli.

It was reranked as Leangella (Leptestiina) by Williams et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Leptestiinae by Mitchell (1977); to Leangella by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Leptestiidae by Liljeroth et al. (2017).
