Taxonomy
Protogryllus grandis was named by Zeuner (1937). Its type specimen is NHML I 10530, a forewing (female forewing), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Strensham, Worcestershire, which is in a Rhaetian marine horizon in the Lilstock Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Protogryllus (Protogryllus) grandis by Pérez-de la Fuente et al. (2012).
