Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. Sterli 2015Representatives of Meiolaniformes are currently diagnosed relative to other turtles by the presence of a large prefrontal exposure, a lack of a frontal contribution to the orbit, the presence of a ventral crest on the vomer, a crista supraoccipitalis that extends posteriorly well beyond the foramen magnum, formed cervical vertebrae, opisthocoelous vertebrae in the anterior part of the tail, randomly distributed small pits on the surface of the dermal bones of the skull and shell and anteriorly inflected marginal scute sulci along the carapacial margin
J. Sterli and M. S. de la Fuente 2019It differs from the basal members of Testudinata (taxa outside Perichelydia clade) by the reduction of the processus interfenestralis of the opisthotic, absence of the processus basitrabecularis, and an enclosed canalis cavernosus.
