Orthophlebia pygmaea was named by Handlirsch (1939). Its type specimen is BMNH J. 32685, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Warwickshire (BMNH coll), which is in a Rhaetian/Hettangian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
It was synonymized subjectively with Orthophlebia nana by Martynova (1948).
