Taxonomy

Iridomyrmex was named by Mayr (1862). It is extant.

It was assigned to Tapinomini by Emery (1913), Wheeler (1915); to Dolichoderinae by Zhang (1989); to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Dolichoderini by Bolton (2003); and to Leptomyrmicini by Bolton (2012).

Synonyms

Iridomyrmex mapesi was named by Wilson (1985). Its type specimen is MCZ, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Claiborne amber, Malvern, which is in a Bartonian terrestrial amber in the Cockfield Formation of Arkansas.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011).
Iridomyrmex breviantennis was named by Theobald (1937). Its type specimen is Bale Museum R 484(10), an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Kleinkembs, which is in a Rupelian lacustrine - large marl/limestone in the Salt Formation of Germany.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011), Bolton (2012).
Iridomyrmex florissantius was named by Carpenter (1930). Its type specimen is MCZ 2872, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (MCZ Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011), Bolton (2012).
Iridomyrmex obscurans was named by Carpenter (1930). Its type specimen is USNM 78799, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (USNM Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011), Bolton (2012).
