Pyrochroa was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pyrochroidae.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Macrogastri by Latreille (1802); and to Pyrochroinae by Bouchard et al. (2011).
