Cistelites was named by Heer (1864). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Cistelites insignis.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Andrews (1970).

It was assigned to Cisteleniae by Scudder (1900); to Alleculinae by Kirejtshuk et al. (2008), Bousquet et al. (2018); and to Coleoptera by Handlirsch (1906), Batelka et al. (2018), Nabozhenko (2019).
