Platyostoma inornatum was named by Walcott (1884). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Strophostylus inornata by Weller (1898) and Yochelson and Saunders (1967); it was recombined as Naticopsis (Naticopsis) inornata by Gordon and Yochelson (1987); it was recombined as Naticopsis inornata by Wagner (2023).
