Chelonarium was named by Fabricius (1801). It is extant. It is the type genus of Chelonariites.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1801); to Necrophagi by Latreille (1802); and to Chelonariidae by Bouchard et al. (2011), Alekseev and Bukejs (2021), Poinar and Háva (2021).
