Smicrips was named by LeConte (1878). It is extant. It is the type genus of Smicripidae.

It was assigned to Monotomites by LeConte (1878); and to Smicripidae by Kirejtshuk and Nel (2008), Bukejs and Kirejtshuk (2015), Cai and Huang (2016).
