Pinnixa was named by White (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Pinnixinae.
It was assigned to Pinnotheridae by Rathbun (1926), Via (1966), Collins and Wienberg Rasmussen (1992); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Pinnotherinae by Morris and Collins (1991), Collins et al. (2003); to Pinnothereliinae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017); and to Pinnixinae by Schweitzer et al. (2023).
