Trichopsocus maculosus was named by Mockford (1969). Its type specimen is UCMP 12729, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is UCMP IP12960, Mexican amber, which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
