Taxonomy
Gondvanogomphus was named by Schlüter and Hartung (1982). Its type is Gondvanogomphus bartheli. It is the type genus of Gondvanogomphidae.

It was assigned to Gomphidae by Schlüter and Hartung (1982); and to Gondvanogomphidae by Bechly (2007).
