Pachytylopsis was named by de Borre (1875). Its type is Pachytylopsis persenairei. It is the type genus of Pachytylopsidae.

It was assigned to Pachytylopsidae by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922), Pruvost (1930), Carpenter (1992).
