Artzosuchus was named by Efimov (1983). Its type is Artzosuchus brachicephalus. It is the type genus of Artzosuchinae.

It was assigned to Artzosuchinae by Efimov (1983); and to Artzosuchidae by Storrs and Efimov (2000).
