Nepa was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Nepoidea, Nepinae.
It was assigned to Proboscidea by Scopoli (1763); to Ryngota by Fabricius (1775); to Hemiptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Nepariae by Latreille (1802); to Nepidae by Heer (1853); and to Nepinae by Nel and Paicheler (1992).
