Brodioptera was named by Copeland (1957). It is the type genus of Brodiopteridae.
It was assigned to Megasecoptera by Copeland (1957); and to Brodiopteridae by Carpenter (1963), Durden (1984), Nelson and Tidwell (1987), Carpenter (1992), Brauckmann et al. (1996).
