Rhizotrogus was named by Latreille (1825). It is extant. It is the type genus of Rhizotrogidae.
It was assigned to Melolonthinae by Krell (2000); to Rhizotrogina by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Rhizotrogini by Allsopp and Schoolmeesters (2024).
