Scutelleridae was named by Leach (1815). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Scutellerinae by Statz and Wagner (1950).

It was assigned to Hemiptera by Piton (1940); to Pentatomidae by Statz and Wagner (1950); and to Pentatomoidea by Szwedo (2018), Wu et al. (2018).
