Taxonomy
Plesiosaurus macropterus was named by Seeley (1865). Its type specimen is CAMSM J.35182, a skeleton (almost complete skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Microcleidus macropterus by Watson (1911).
