Pterocephalia was named by Roemer (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u Cm Fran-l Sepkoski's reference number: 16,489].

It was reranked as Conocephalites (Pterocephalus) by Hall and Whitfield (1877); it was reranked as Ptychoparia (Pterocephalus) by Walcott (1884).

It was assigned to Conocephalites by Hall and Whitfield (1877); to Ptychoparia by Walcott (1884); to Pterocephaliinae by Palmer (1960); to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterocephaliidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
