Palaeomantis was named by Handlirsch (1904). Its type is Palaeomantis schmidti. It is the type genus of Palaeomantidae.
It was assigned to Palaeomantidae by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Martynov (1927), Martynov (1928), Martynov (1930), Martynov (1940), van Dijk and Geertsema (1999); and to Palaeomanteidae by Novokshonov (1998), Rasnitsyn (2004), Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013), Prokop et al. (2015), Prokop et al. (2017).
