Apsilocephalidae was named by Nagatomi et al. (1991). It is extant. Its type is Apsilocephala.
It was synonymized subjectively with Rhagionempididae by Nagatomi and Yang (1998).
It was assigned to Brachycera by Nagatomi et al. (1991), Hauser and Irwin (2005); and to Asiloidea by Wiegmann et al. (2011), Grimaldi et al. (2011), Winterton and Ware (2015), Grimaldi (2016), Winterton et al. (2016), Shin et al. (2018).
It was synonymized subjectively with Rhagionempididae by Nagatomi and Yang (1998).
