Aerophasmidae was named by Martynov (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Aerophasma.

It was corrected as Aerophasmatidae by Engel et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Chresmododea by Martynov (1928); to Xiphopteridea by Sharov (1968), Whalley (1985); and to Holophasmatodea by Engel et al. (2016).
