Phasianus medius was named by Milne-Edwards (1871).

It was synonymized subjectively with Miogallus altus by Mlikovsky (2002); it was recombined as Miophasianus medius by Lambrecht (1933), Gaillard (1939), de Villalta (1963) and Sánchez‐Marco (2021).
