Taxonomy

Protereismidae was named by Handlirsch (1919). Its type is Protereisma.

It was corrected as Protereismatidae by Handlirsch (1919), Carpenter (1933), Zimmerman (1962), Hubbard and Kukalová-Peck (1980), Carpenter (1992), Willmann (2007), Staniczek et al. (2011), Sroka et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Ephemerida by Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922); to Plectoptera by Martynov (1928), Martynov (1932), Carpenter (1933); to Ephemeroptera by Zimmerman (1962), Carpenter (1992); to Reticulata by Willmann (2007); to Protereismatoidea by Hubbard and Kukalová-Peck (1980), Staniczek et al. (2011); and to Permoplectoptera by Sroka et al. (2014).

Synonyms

Therates planus was named by Sellards (1907). It is an impression. Its type locality is Elmo, Sellards collection, which is in an Artinskian pond limestone in the Wellington Formation of Kansas. It is the type species of Esca, Therates.

It was recombined as Esca plana by Handlirsch (1922); it was considered a nomen vanum by Carpenter (1933).
Kukalovidae was named by Demoulin (1970).

It was synonymized subjectively with Protereismatidae by Carpenter (1979), Carpenter (1992).
