Coelopis was named by Munier-Chalmas (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi K l]. It is not extant. Its type is Cardita lunulata.

It was reranked as Opis (Coelopis) by Munier-Chalmas (1887) and Frech (1912).

It was assigned to Opis by Munier-Chalmas (1887) and Frech (1912); to Opinae by Vokes (1980); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Astartidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
