Aulosteges fairbridgei was named by Coleman (1957). Its type specimen is UWA 29348f and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Megasteges fairbridgei by Archbold (1988); it was recombined as Saeptathaerus fairbridgei by Waterhouse and Chen (2007).
