Paraophthalmosaurus was named by Arkhangelsky (1997).

It was synonymized subjectively with Ophthalmosaurus by Maisch and Matzke (2000).

It was assigned to Ophthalmosauria by Motani (1999); to Ichthyosauridae by Storrs et al. (2000); and to Ophthalmosaurinae by Arkhangelsky and Zverkov (2014).
