Sinomastodon was named by Tobien et al. (1986). Its type is Sinomastodon intermedius.
It was assigned to Rhynchotheriinae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Gomphotheriidae by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Parray et al. (2022).
