Megalosauria was named by Bonaparte (1850).

It was synonymized subjectively with Dinosaurii by Bonaparte (1850); it was reranked as the suborder Megalosauria by Seeley (1892), Osborn (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Theropoda by Hay (1902); it was reranked as the superfamily Megalosauria by Lull (1915), Lull (1917); it was reranked as the unranked clade Megalosauria by Jaekel (1911), Carrano et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Archosauria by Baur (1891); to Praepubici by Jaekel (1911); to Theropoda by Lull (1915); to Theropoda by Osborn (1904), Lull (1912), Lull (1917); to Saurischia by Seeley (1892), Nopcsa (1923); and to Megalosauroidea by Carrano et al. (2012).
