Copelatus was named by Erichson (1832). It is extant. It is the type genus of Copelatinae, Copelatini.
It was assigned to Colymbetini by LeConte (1861); to Copelatini by Nilsson (2001); to Dytiscidae by Carpenter (1992), Solórzano Kraemer (2007); and to Copelatinae by Bouchard et al. (2011).
